A beautiful series designed and printed in 1886. Chikanobu explores a wide range of subjects in this incredible illustrated series including ghosts, famous warriors, beauties of ancient legend, and tales of trumph and treachery.
The beautiful Lady Senju no Mae, an attendant of Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147 - 1199), performs a dance before a captured warrior, Taira no Shigehira. In return Shigehira (1156 - 1185) played the lute and sang for her. After Shigehira's execution, Lady Senju no Mae became a nun.
The inset above shows Shigehira watching the Minamoto fleet prior to the battle of Muroyama.
