KUNIYOSHI Utagawa ( 1797 - 1831 )

He was one of Toyokuni's students and the rival of Kunisada (Who took the name of Toyokuni III in 1844).

He became a successful artist through his vitality, the profusion of his ideas but most of all by illustrating the long Chinese novel of cap and swords "Suikoden". He also shaped the technic of bijin-ga (feminine beauty) by introducing in other ways the use of shadows. Last but not least, he had a high influence in the art of landscape by adopting the occidental way of treating the masses and the clouds (see his series of Edo's landscape).
